MAKING FURNITURE TALLER - carved bedside tables

Sometimes you can add legs to
your furniture to get more height
but other times you can't. This time I had to come up with an alternative plan to get these
bedside tables taller.

MOVABLE CEDAR HEDGE

I showed the beginning photos of my yard project yesterday but I didn't go into any details.

One of the details was that my cedar hedge is movable.
It is made of 3 cedar trees planted in boxes sit on a rolling platform.

The platform has large wheels that roll easy on rough ground. I found the platform at a yard sale
years ago and it has been used for countless things around the house. I believe it was originally
made for a plant nursery and had poles and shelves and takes a lot of weight. In the before photo
below you can see the platform a bit better, the large wheels and on top it has a metal grate.

,

To hide some of the platform once in place I attached a board across the bottom front, like a skirt.
It is simply screwed into the wood planter boxes and hangs down over the front of the platform.

If you want to create a movable hedge or plant screen you don't need to wait and find a
platform like I did, you could build one with treated 2 x 4 lumber and giant castors.
Just make sure it is strong enough for the plants you want to use.

This area makes for a great place to stop and reflect and my movable hedge covers up
anything I want to hide behind it, like furniture bits and wood supplies.

The finishing touch to the spot was my old reading frog water sprinkler, how cute is he?

I still have a few more areas and things to share with you about my garden makeover,
so if your interested keep watching.

TURN A MISSING DRAWER into an OPEN SHELF

When you come across a piece of furniture that has a missing a drawer, what do you do?
For this project I turn this space into a shelf.

With the frame that was already there from the drawer one large board could be used to make a shelf.
First I would have to get that middle drawer runner out of the way, and this one was pretty secure
so I brought in the big guns and used the crow bar and hammer.

I had an old cupboard door that needed a slight trim and then it fit the space to make the shelf.

I painted most of the shelf board outside of the cupboard before securing it in place
with screws from underneath. I found the perfect molding at the local RESTORE to trim the
front of the shelf. The trim molding was nailed into place then painted.

Don't turn away from furniture that has a drawer issue ... BE INSPIRED BY IT!!!

TALL FARMHOUSE CUPBOARD INSPIRATION

I really need some more turquoise pottery to do a photo shoot like this justice. But this is the
best I could right now. Please enjoy the pretty pictures of my Farmhouse Cupboard.

I painted the cabinet in AS Old White and hand waxed the finish after distressing.
She's a good storage and display piece with 2 lined drawers and 4 shelves.

DISTRESSING & WAXING AS CHALK PAINT

Yesterday I shared how I used Gilders Paste to refinish these drawer handles,
today I'll share how I refinished the drawers.

I filled the original hardware holes and painted the drawers in Annie Sloan Old White.
Now I had to re-drill new holes in a new spot for the new handles.

I used a 120 grit sandpaper to get a heavy distressing, but I always sand in the direction of the wood grain.

I sanded the entire surface to get it smooth but concentrate on all the edges.

The places that start to thin out when I'm sanding are other areas to watch for, usually there is a high
spot or blemish that has caught the sand paper. I always highlight these flaws when shabby chicing.
The computer is putting a red line under chicing so I assume it's not an accurate spelling ...
but you get my meaning!

I also sanded heavier around the hardware holes. It smooth's out any burs left from the drill
and there is always going to be natural wear in these areas.

After all the dust was vacuumed away it was time to wax. I work in small sections when waxing.

I used AS clear Wax and a flat chip brush to apply the wax.

For the rest of the process I used paper towel, to remove the excess wax (as seen above)

and to buff the wax, but when I buff I grab a new clean piece of paper towel (as seen below)

There is no wait time for me when I wax. I apply the wax and I remove the excess right away,
then I buff. The whole process takes minutes. I DO NOT wait 30 minutes or 24 hours.

Once the buffing was finished I insert the handles and screw them in from inside the drawer.

NOTE:

There are many different ways to achieve similar results. I hope I always inspire or help
you to create something special in your projects and I hope you will be brave and experiment
on your own to find different ways and technics that work for you.
